This month come and here about the Bathurst War Memorial Carillon – a memorial with a voice
Bathurst War Memorial Carillon stands in the centre of beautiful King’s Parade as a symbol of remembrance and community dedication. In the aftermath of the Great War, the people of Bathurst and district selected a carillon as their memorial and set about raising the necessary funds during the difficult postwar and Depression years. Following the official opening on 11 November 1933 the memorial became known as the Singing Tower, a memorial with a voice that, whenever heard, would be a powerful reminder of sacrifice during the war years. Bathurst became the Carillon City with the distinctive tower an iconic representation of the city utilised on logos, the Carillon name a feature of festivals and events, and carillon music an integral part of civic life. In the early 1980s the original voice fell silent and it would be almost 40 years before the Bathurst Carillon would finally attain, for the first time, its full voice. This is the story of community dedication and the emergence of a new carillon culture
Jan Page OAM is the president of the Friends of Bathurst War Memorial Carillon and a local historian who writes about, and conducts tours of, the Carillon. She is author of Machattie Park – Bathurst.
