Meet the Microbes: An Introduction to the Soil Food Web

Ever wondered what’s really going on in the soil world? Join us for Meet the Microbes, an engaging and hands-on workshop that dives into the fascinating world of the Soil Food Web. We’ll explore the difference between soil and dirt, uncover the vital roles of bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes (and their microscopic friends), and discover how plants interact with this underground ecosystem to build healthy, resilient landscapes.

Then we’ll get up close and personal with the soil life itself — using microscopes to observe the tiny critters that drive nutrient cycling, plant health, and soil structure. Whether you're a grower, gardener, or just soil-curious, this is your chance to meet the microbes and see the living soil in action.

Meet your host

Ernie is a passionate soil advocate, educator, and professional composter with a powerhouse background in Chemistry, Environmental Science, Biogeochemistry, and Education. After co-founding a thriving community garden in Singleton, she dove deep into the world of composting — becoming a Master Composter, Certified Soil Food Web Microscopist, and self-taught soil ecologist. Inspired by the documentary Kiss the Ground, Ernie launched Soil Sisters Singleton to connect her community through soil regeneration, sustainability, and self-care. As a single mum to two budding ecowarriors, she leads by example through her business Compost Culture, sharing the joy of composting and the mission of growing nutrient-dense food from healthy soils.
