More than Mushrooms: Exploring Fungi

  • Enivronmental Learning Facility 234 Phillip Street Orange, NSW, 2800 Australia (map)

Fungi form an entire kingdom of life that quietly underpins the health of our planet. In this talk, we’ll explore what fungi are, how they function, and their vital roles in the environment—as saprotrophs breaking down organic matter, as recyclers returning nutrients to the soil, and as mycorrhizal partners supporting plant life. We’ll also touch on the exciting potential of fungi to help restore damaged landscapes and ecosystems.

Guest Speaker: Dr. Michael J. Priest

Dr. Michael J. Priest is a former Special Plant Pathologist and Curator of the Plant Pathology Herbarium (DAR) at the Orange Agricultural Institute, NSW DPI, Australia. He is widely recognised for his expertise in plant pathology, particularly in the study of fungi, and has published extensively on plant diseases, fungal biology, and insect-related pathogen diagnostics.
